Why disciplined people secretly terrify and impress me all at once
Discipline. The word alone sounds like punishment, doesn’t it? Like something you’d read off a warning label: “Caution: May cause excessive productivity and general loss of chaos.” But honestly, discipline is one of those rare traits I deeply admire in others—and sometimes, even in myself.
Let me be clear: I’m not naturally disciplined. I’m naturally chaotic, with flashes of brilliance that burn out faster than my enthusiasm for gym memberships. But when I see people who consistently show up for themselves—whether they’re perfecting a second language, waking up at 5 a.m. to do yoga, or even remembering to floss daily—I feel both impressed and personally attacked.
Here’s the thing: discipline is the backbone of every other virtue we all love to brag about. You can’t fake persistence or determination without it. Trust me, I’ve tried. Without discipline, persistence is just you screaming, “I got this!” while life repeatedly throws pies in your face. Determination without discipline? That’s basically me telling myself I’ll start eating healthier tomorrow… for the 126th day in a row.
Now, because I love oversharing on the internet, here are the top three things I admire about myself when I actually manage to harness my inner discipline:
1. Time Management: I can wrangle my schedule like a cowboy taming a wild stallion. (Okay, more like a drunk cowboy, but the horse still moves forward.)
2. Persistence: Even when I’m crawling to the finish line of a task, I will get there. Eventually. Probably.
3. Determination: If I set my mind to something, there’s a 50/50 chance I’ll do it—but hey, those are still decent odds in today’s world.
But the truth is, without discipline, none of those traits would stick. Discipline is the unsung hero of adulting, the thing that turns your life from “hot mess express” to “functional human being (most days).”
So here’s to the disciplined folks out there—those magical humans who make commitment look easy. You’re basically the Navy SEALs of normal life, and I salute you. Meanwhile, the rest of us will be over here, quietly trying to copy your moves without setting something on fire.
